Caring For Women and Children
Bringing hope and healing
Becoming a mother should be an exciting, joyous time. But for many women in crisis who have nowhere to give birth safely, it is a moment riddled with fear.
Similarly, watching a child battle malnutrition because there is not enough food is a heartbreaking experience for any parent. We are giving women and children – often among the most vulnerable during a crisis – a much better chance of survival in some of the world’s most challenging places.
Here’s how we make a difference.
Nutrition
In times of disaster and crisis, Medair runs intensive malnutrition treatment programmes that nourish and save the lives of young children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers as well as teaching communities healthier infant feeding practices to prevent malnutrition in the future.
Health Care
With your help, Medair supports local health clinics to train and supervise health clinic staff and provide them with essential medicines and supplies. We focus our support on primary health care, vaccinations, and safe childbirth. These improvements don’t just mean easier and safer births and healthier childhoods for thousands of women and children –they actually save lives.
Community Health
We run ‘Care Groups’ of trained women volunteers who regularly visit with women and their families in their community to promote good health, hygiene, and nutrition. In some communities with poor access to health clinics, we train local health workers to visit ill children at home and treat the most common killer diseases—malaria, diarrhoea and pneumonia. We also increase access and strengthen support services for trauma victims and women and girls affected by gender-based violence.
